Construction-only accountants · £1m to £15m

Accountants who know the difference between an application and an invoice.

Taxtful looks after the numbers for UK construction companies: CIS, reverse charge VAT, retentions, project margin and the tax planning that comes with growth. Every month you get one page that says what's happening, why it matters and what to do.

The Taxtful View in full

If you can't answer these three questions, you're not failing. You've been let down.

Chris explains it in 90 seconds.

1

What margin did your last job actually make?

Not the tender margin. The real one, after the variations, the wet weeks and the extra labour.

2

How much is being held from you in retentions, and when is it due?

To the pound, with a release date and a name next to each one.

3

What's your bank balance going to be in eight weeks?

Based on your contracts' payment schedules, not a guess.

Your accountant has the data to answer all three. If they've never told you, that's the service, not you. The 90 Day Profit Reset fixes it.

Everything a growing contractor needs from an accountant, built around how construction actually works.

General practice accountants treat a construction company like a shop with a longer invoice cycle. It isn't. Stage payments, retentions, CIS, reverse charge, plant, subcontractor status and long-running jobs all change what good accounting looks like. We only work with construction, so none of it is new to us.

What we fix first for most new clients

These are the issues we find in the majority of construction companies that come to us from a general practice firm. None of them are unusual. All of them cost money.

  • CIS suffered not being reclaimed against PAYE each month
  • Reverse charge VAT applied to the wrong customers, or not at all
  • Retentions sitting in debtors with no release dates tracked
  • Applications for payment booked as sales before certification
  • No idea which jobs made money until the year-end accounts arrive
  • Plant bought on finance with capital allowances never claimed
  • Subcontractor status never reviewed, leaving employment-tax exposure
  • Directors paid with no plan for the corporation tax bill

Case study: a main contractor with a cash problem it couldn't see

A commercial fit-out contractor joined Taxtful with a £6m turnover, a healthy order book and a habit of running out of cash in month three of every job. The accounts said the business was profitable. The bank balance said otherwise.

The gap was retentions and uncertified applications. Around £340,000 was tied up in retentions across nine jobs with no one tracking release dates, and sales were being recognised on application rather than certification, so margin was being overstated on every live project.

We rebuilt job costing on a certified basis, introduced a retention ledger with release dates and a monthly chase, and built a 13-week cash flow forecast tied to the payment schedule of each contract. Within six months the business had recovered £210,000 of overdue retentions and stopped using its overdraft.
